In the world of sports, there are the competitors and the spectators. Then there is Marge Schott. This page is about my quests not to be Marge Schott in the world of fantasy sports leagues.
1995-96 NBA Season:
Huskies push Annihilators off cliff with late Shaq deal, salvage third
My first foray into fantasy sports was in a small house league, the Blaisdell Fantasy Basketball Association. Four teams, $10 each, free agents $2, trades free, runner-up $10, winner rest. The first four weeks went okay, but neglect in December brought my Huskies down. The only real battle in the four-team league became for third, with my Huskies and Andrew Brownback's Annihilators tied going into the 25th and final week. I secured victory in the short week by acquiring Joe Smith at F for my backup center, Shaquille O'Neal, from the second-place Beavises.
1996 MLB Season:
26376 Huskies meet the Disabled List
In March 1996, I joined a game on ESPNET SportsZone ZoneGames for the 1996 baseball season. Ten teams per league, $29.95 per team for subscribers, no transaction fees. I did well, traded Barry Bonds in a deal which got me Mo Vaughn and Ricky Bottalico, and did a little better, sitting in first at the beginning of June. Then Avery and Schmidt went on the DL, Walker broke his collarbone, Langston fizzled, Justice dislocated his shoulder, and 3 July found me in sixth. Again neglect played a factor, as I didn't see my team from then until 16 August, when I was dead last. September did bring me a comeback, scraping my way to eighth place at season's end, as seen on the final league page of the season. (Note: that last link contains tables.)
1996-7 NFL Season:
26376 Scarlet Hawks, 26376 Forest Rangers seek redemption
For the 1996 football campaign, I have two teams in SportsZone's game. $19.95 for the Scarlet Hawks, $17.95 for the Forest Rangers, no transaction fees, ten teams per league, head-to-head. Curtis Conway's Monday night TD pass led both teams to Week 1 victories. Alas, undefeated seasons were not to be, but the Forest Rangers played better than the Hawks for the first five weeks. Then the Scarlet Hawks broke out for 91 points (behind Drew Bledsoe's 4 TD passes) in Week Six to move to 3-3, while the Rangers scored an embarrassing 30 to fall to 2-4.
