There is a very good reason that Emily's jersey looks like it does. She is the most relentlessly cheerful person I have ever met. She tries to be colorful when she sends me mail; my mother even commented once that an unidentified piece of mail was "not colorful enough to be from Emily." The fact that I consider Emily to be my friend is a testament to the greatest benefit of the American Regions Math League competition. George Milauskas would probably drop dead, then roll over in his grave to hear me say this, but the math part of that competition was not the most important thing. It's a lot like the All-Star Game in Major League Baseball; a bunch of outstanding people, people who spend the rest of the year competing ruthlessly (in a nice way) against each other get to relax a little, have fun, and get to know each other on a more personal level. Emily was from IMSA, Naperville North's supreme arch-nemesis from a math team point of view. We were co-captains of the "Chicago B" team at ARML '93, the only team in all of Division A to receive zero points on the second relay. Irrespective of our team's performance, though, Captain Benda had a successful meet just because he acquired a friend in Captain Schafer. She's the only friend I really ever made from IMSA, and she should be proud of that. She is a large reason I wanted to go to ARML '94 in the first place (yes, Breen, I admit that), and I was glad when she was named as a fill-in that year. Now she's back to the land of the Owls, doubtless making those people who do get to meet her feel just a little happier for it.
