Kelly was the editor-in-chief of the North Star my senior year at NNHS. This means that when I wrote my letter to the North Star editorial staff questioning the behavior of certain members of the student body, I knew what to do with it--I gave it to her. It got published in its entirety, too. In that capacity she probably had to deal with the newspaper's adviser, Pat Martin, more than any other member of the Class of 1994. Kelly was therefore one of the people I talked to on the phone on 13 November 1994, the day after Robert Martin, the math team coach and Pat's husband, died. Kelly's other standout activity at NNHS was on Student Government. When I did all my election research before the representative and officer elections for the 1993-94 school year, which involved questioning the incumbent officers, the chief adviser, and several past representatives, every person I asked--except Kelly herself--gave her the highest rating as far as past performance among all the candidates. Despite this, she failed in her reelection bid as NNSG Secretary, falling victim to the Josh Rest Machine. Politics is a tough racket, even if you're the best person for the job.
