Okay, where do I begin? I guess I can begin with my freshman year, when I first met Theresa. She was in my second- and sixth-hour classes, one of the few people that I had two classes with. Here's the rest of her (and my) freshman schedule:

That's frightening; I still remember that. It was quite a challenge back in 1990-1 piecing that (her) schedule together, using a lot of deductive reasoning, some good observation powers, and for the study hall, a little spying. By now you should be wondering how she felt about all this. She was, to be nice, a bit surprised the day I told her her schedule (as much as I had; periods 2-6). I also gave her her ID number (off the attendance sheet for Room 281) and her locker number within one or two (more spying--she never did tell me how close I was, but based on her facial expression at the time I'd say I was really close). It's amazing what you can get done in a six-minute passing period. Anyway, Theresa was also a softball player, a catcher to be precise. Although I don't like to admit this, the fact that my "target", so to speak, was on the softball team is probably a reason I first started working for softball. (I still liked softball, though, and I would have still gone to several games anyway as it was (and still is) my favorite spring sport.) Theresa also played my favorite position her sophomore year, where she became the only person I have ever seen singlehandedly delay a softball game because of a wardrobe problem. (She should like that phrasing.) We were delayed for a while, then she came back in, then after about another inning or so we has to put Kate Cleland in for her. I didn't see Theresa in class again until Marek's class as a senior. A funny thing happened in that class; she came to the conclusion that I was a moderately worthwhile individual (or, in her words, "I knew by senior
year you were a damn cool person,"). Since we have graduated from Naperville North and gone our separate ways, I think we have become better friends. (This is, by the way, not uncommon.) Every so often I reread various e-mail files she has sent me (hence the quote above). Usually I sit there amazed at what she has had to say. I once said that if everyone I knew were exactly like me, I'd never learn anything about myself. Theresa has taught me a lot of things about myself, likely more things than I care to admit. Every so often I find myself thinking about one thing or another, and I remember something she said, and I have to laugh and say, "Shut up, Theresa." She's a funny, pleasant person who knows more about a lot of things than I do, and I am happy that after everything I did to her, she's still my friend.
